THE NAME
The name “Marabou” itself makes people wonder why someone named a hotel in eastern Pelion after an exotic bird. Many years ago, when the owner of this hotel, Mr Gagakis Xristos, traveled the world as captain, he met Nikos Kavvadias, a famous Greek poet, who was also a seaman. Soon enough they became friends. Because of this relationship our captain appreciated even more Kavvadias’ poetry. Years later, when Mr Gagakis started to build up his hotel in Horefto, he decided to name it after Kavvadias’ first collection of poems, which is titled “Marabou”, in order to pay the last tribute to this Greek poet.
AS TIME GOES BY . . .
The hotel was built in 1980. The west northern side of the hotel, which offers view of the beach of Horefto, was constructed first. A few years later the southeastern wing was built onto the hotel, which has view of the port of Horefto. From the very beginning visitors preferred Marabou hotel for its accommodation services. During the decades between the 1980s and 1990s many important people had visited Marabou hotel. In fact this could be considered as a period of glory for “Marabou”. Besides greek visitors “Marabou” hosted groups of German hikers. As a matter of fact “Marabou” still cooperates with the “Wikingers”, one of the largest travel agencies in Germany.
THREE YEARS AGO . . .
