Pelion

Pelion is a mountain of Thessaly, which lies between the Aegean Sea, on one side and the Pagasetic Gulf, on the other side. The perfect combination of sea and mountain renders it a magical place. The forested mountain of Pelion is situated above the city of Volos. It is related with numerous myths, legends and presents an interesting history and cultural tradition. In this mountain took place the battle between the Giants (Gigants), mythical creatures. It is also mentioned as the summer residence of Olympian Gods.

According to the ancient Greek mythology Pelion is considered to be the land of Centaurs, mythical creatures. The most famous Centaur was Chiron, known as a wisdom tutor. Goddess, kings, princesses and heroes as Hercules, Achilles and Jason had been taught by him archery, music and the art of the war. Chiron had also taught them about the curative abilities of the plants and herbs grown up in this region until today.

During Turkish occupation the 24 villages of Pelion met a rapid economic development. In this period the majority of the habitants from the surrounding area established themselves on the mountainous regions of Pelion in order to escape themselves from slavery.

One of the financial activities of Pelion villagers was the exportation of their local products abroad. Caravans transporting mainly clothes made by silk and shoes departed to Eastern Mediterranean, Bien and other European capitals. At the same time many libraries and schools had been founded in this region.
